You know how sometimes the greatest treasures are located in the plainest of sights and yet we somehowusually fail to notice them? Or that if we are tourists in a foreign country, we tend to devote our attention to the most popular places although they aren't always the most worthwhile? Well, it was only recently that I discovered the magic and exquisiteness of Pchelina Dam which turned out to be located no more than half an hour away from my hometown, Pernik, and I have to admit that it impressed me a big deal.

Below the far-reaching waters of the artificial lake are supposed to lie the remainants of what was once called Pchelintsi village. This backstory predisposes for the foundation of an interesting short story or another piece of fiction (especially if you are a fantasy fan), even more if you add the stunning views to it.

Once you enter the village of Potsarnentsi, there is a short distance where you continue moving forward by car on a considerably rough road. At some point you will realise you will have to procede on foot, but that shouldn't give you a fright as the walk is immensely pleasant and enjoyable. You can then choose one of two ways - you can walk toward the hill where you will find a small temple and from where you will have a breathtaking view; or you can take the path downwards which will lead you to some meadows nearby the water which are ideal for a picnic and solitude.

Once you go up, towards the temple, you can observe the magnitude of the reservoir of water and you will still be unable to see where it ends. If you are looking for a place to meditate, then this would definitely be the most peaceful and rewarding spot (just as long as you don't go there as the sun begins to set since the mosquitoes will try to get their fair share of blood; in other words, the view on the hill was as sweet for us as our blood was for them).

Taking the other path, towards the water, is also certainly pleasing as it provides you with the opportunity to get closer to the artificial lake and to relax under the shade of some tree in the middle of a sunny day. You can read a book, play cards with friends, have lunch, or even take a nap if you feel like it. Regardless, you could spend as much time as you need away from all the hustle and bustle that a crowded and polluted city could offer.

Overall, Pchelina Dam is a place not far from the capital of Bulgaria so if you are a tourist from abroad or a citizen living in Sofia or nearby, I strongly advise you against missing the chance of taking a walk amongst the alluring and fascinating nature that awaits for you there. Just remember that the mosquitoes in the evening are enemies to not underestimate. Otherwise, it is a hundred percent worth the trip.
